Two credit unions, two founding stories, one shared belief that members do better when they own the institution serving them. Together, they are now Waypoint Credit Union.
Two Credit Unions, One Story
Waypoint Credit Union was built from two credit unions that each spent decades serving the people around them. In 1936, 27 Norwich-area teachers organized a credit union at a meeting in the Wauregan Hotel, starting with $15 and a shared account book. That credit union grew, merged with several of its neighbors, and became CorePlus Credit Union in 2001.
In 1968, four Pfizer scientists in Groton started a credit union of their own from a conference room table in Building 41. It grew alongside the region, expanded beyond Pfizer to serve more of Connecticut, and became Scient Federal Credit Union in 2012.
In October 2025, CorePlus and Scient combined to form Waypoint Federal Credit Union, carrying both histories, and both memberships, into one credit union built the same way from the start: owned by the people who bank there.

1964
The credit union's assets reach $100,000.
1968
Four Pfizer scientists in Groton found the Pfizer Employees Credit Union from a conference room table in Building 41.
1974
Assets surpass $1 million.
1981
Merges with The Pequot Teachers Federal Credit Union.
1983
Pfizer Employees Credit Union converts to a federal charter as Pfizer Employees Federal Credit Union.
1989
Acquires American Standard and Hayward Federal Credit Unions; membership tops 10,000.
1993
Pfizer Employees Federal Credit Union is renamed Ledge Light Federal Credit Union.
2000
Merges with Backus Employees Federal Credit Union.
2001
Renamed CorePlus Credit Union after merging with Norwich Connecticut Federal Credit Union.
2003
Acquires New London Telephone Employees Federal Credit Union.
2006-2007
Opens branches in Plainfield and Waterford.
2008
Fedcon Employees Federal Credit Union merges in.
2009
Membership tops 21,000 and assets exceed $200 million.
2011
CorePlus celebrates its 75th anniversary.
2012
Ledge Light Federal Credit Union is renamed Scient Federal Credit Union.
2014
CorePlus membership surpasses 22,000 across nine locations.
2015
Scient merges with New Haven Postal Employees Federal Credit Union.
2018
CorePlus adds 3,000 members through a merger with Connecticut Community Credit Union.
2022
Scient merges with New London Municipal Employees Credit Union.
2024
Raymond J. Currier is named CorePlus President and CEO.
October 1, 2025
CorePlus Credit Union and Scient Federal Credit Union combine to form Waypoint Credit Union.
