Get Your Free Credit Report
Your credit report shapes what you pay to borrow, and sometimes whether you get the apartment or the job. Reading it costs you nothing and takes about ten minutes.
Where to Get It, and Where Not To
AnnualCreditReport.com is the only site authorised under federal law to give you free reports from all three nationwide bureaus. Anything charging a fee, offering a trial, or asking for a card number is selling you what you can get for nothing. Type the address yourself rather than following a link in an email.
What You Should Know
Three Bureaus
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion each keep a separate file. Read all three.
Free Weekly Access
The bureaus currently offer free weekly reports through AnnualCreditReport.com.
A Report Is Not a Score
Your free report shows your history. It does not include a credit score.
What Is On It
Bill payment history, where you have lived, and public records such as bankruptcies.
Who Sees It
Lenders, insurers, landlords, and some employers, when you give permission.
Checking Your Own Is Safe
Pulling your own report is a soft inquiry. It does not lower your credit score.
What to Check When You Read It
Read each report the same way. You are looking for two things: mistakes that are costing you, and accounts you do not recognize.
- Accounts you never opened, which can be the first sign of identity theft.
- Payments marked late that you made on time, and balances that look wrong.
- Addresses and employers you have no connection to.
- Old debts reappearing with a new date, which can restart a collection clock.
- How much of your available credit you are using, which moves a score more than most people expect.
Common Questions
Dispute it with the bureau that reported it, in writing, with copies of anything that backs you up. The bureau generally has thirty days to investigate. Dispute with each bureau separately, because they do not share corrections automatically.
Your credit score is available through online banking. Members can sign up for SavvyMoney at no cost.
Yes, with your permission, as part of deciding on your application. That is a hard inquiry and it can affect your score slightly. If you are shopping for a rate, apply within a short window so the inquiries are treated together.
